Wivenhoe Dam is just one hour north-west of Brisbane and is the water storage for South East Queensland with a capacity of 2.5 times that of Sydney Harbour!!

Access to the water is simple with many easy launch points around the dam. The day we went was perfect without much wind, however with all the inlets to explore it wouldn’t take long to find a sheltered piece of water to paddle on.

The highlight of the day was seeing all the different groups of kangaroos lazing about on the waters edge. I was amazed at how relaxed they were as we paddled past and took photos. There were some males that stood as tall as me who I wouldn’t like to battle. Although they looked relaxed and friendly, i’m sure the top Buck of each group would jump into boxing action to protect the females with joeys in his group.Power boats are not permitted on the dam which means its a peaceful place for paddling and swimming. There are barbecues and picnic shelters shattered around the edges. Fishing is also popular with Bass, Silver Perch and Cod all well stocked. With 2 camping sites which cost around $18 per night for 2 people and $7 extra for a powered site suitable for caravans the Wivenhoe Dam is the perfect paddling get away.
