2013 Australian Championships Wrap Up

Australian Sprints 2013 Wrap Up

Team Currumbin was at it's awesome best with both Ken and Bernadette Wallace paddling outstanding races in the senior ranks and Chloe Sterry as a stand-out junior paddler in Australia with her dominant performances in all sprint distances K1, K2 and K4.

Ken in K1, 1000; K1, 500 and K2 500 and Bernadette in K2 500 threw out the gauntlet with both winning paddlers named in the Senior squad for Australia for 2013. Welcome back Bernie ….

Strong performances from Hayden 'H' Clark and Andrew Day in the U16 ranks were a feature of the week in Perth with Andrew grabbing a well deserved gold medal in the 2500m LD event. 'H' spent the whole week knocking on the door for selection to the national sprint ranks after his runaway win to be come U16 Australian Marathon champion last week.

Currumbin's Ellie Leaver smashed the field in the U23 WK1 500 to win the Australian championship and then went on to win the U23 WK2 500 crown as well. Emma Eichhorn came in second in the K2 500, showing the Currumbin affinity with the classic 500m distance.

Kara Kennedy paddled PBs in many events and handled the sometimes windy conditions with great technique and her uncanny determination.

Alex Mckenzie-Templar had a strong presence in the U23 events whilst Joel Mckitterick paddled into an Australian Junior team spot for Canada in July with winning performances in K2 1000, K4 1000 and K4 500. Graham Bendeich chased perennial Australian Sprints winner George Bradilovic in the veterans events down to just 0.8 in a flying 200m final to add to a swag of medals in K1 and then in K2 with Mark Rickard.

A great week of competition matched only by the great sportsmanship and fabulous sense of competition from our Currumbin paddlers. Special thanks to coaches Newtdog and GB and to Ray, Jeremy, Shane, Glenn (loadmasters) and to Andrea Woods for the kayak transport arrangements. Great to see so many families in Perth soaking up the experiences of our athletes.
