Brunswick Marathon – 8th July 2012 – #3 Northern Marathon Series.

The warm weather and sunshine was turned on for the 17 strong Currumbin Creek Paddlers who made the trip down to Brunswick Heads. The 3rd race of the Northern Marathon Series gave paddlers the choice of racing over 5, 12 or 18km.

Tim Stenlake was the stand out performer of the day. Tim, the Birthday boy was all smiles after taking out the open mens 18km marathon. Rick Finch was the next Currumbin Paddler to cross the line ahead of Grant Epple. There was a strong 3 way battle between rivals Darryl Stenlake, John Newton and Mark Richard finishing in that order in the 18km. Sharon Kyme paddled well finishing just behind the boys as the first female over 18km. Keith looked like a sprint kayaker as he crossed the finish while Glen Clark showed chivalry letting the female ski paddler take line honours. German paddler Matthias Dorsch was triumphant after a close finish with fellow Currumbin Creek paddler Hayden Clark in the U18 12km.

It was fantastic to see Andrea Wood and Bernadette Wallace have a hit out in the k2. Di and Dave looked fantastic as always in their Tk2 while Jo had the opportunity to team up with Richard who has paddled the Hawksberry Marathon a crazy amount of times. We are team players at Currumbin – never will you be alone. If one capsizes, 1, 2 or 3 other club members will join you for a refreshing dip!! Not to mention any names but we wouldn’t keep our fine reputation without a few capsizes along the way!!!

Everyone gathered at the Brunswick Hotel after the race to share race stories, plan new adventures and lunch. The Currumbin crew will be heading down to do the iconic 110km Hawksberry marathon race in October this year. Richard was kind enough to share his wealth of experience and knowledge. His tips will come in very handy. It was a great day!
